Anemia is a disorder in which the blood is deficient in red blood cells, hemoglobin, or in total volume. Problems stemming from anemia include decreased circulation, decreased oxygen to the cells, lethargy and unexplained weight loss. Simple forms of anemia may be classified as iron, B12, and/or Folic Acid deficiency and the complex forms will include some variation of these deficiencies as well as irregular Red Blood Cells (RBC). A complex form of anemia could lead to more viscous blood creating circulation issues particularly to the hoof. As the root issue with anemia is the horse’s inability to effectively metabolize nutrients, external supplementation is of limited and relatively “short lived” value.

Anemia is increasingly common in horses, especially for those horses with Equine metabolic Syndrome (EMS)/ Insulin Resistance (IR) and/or Intestinal Malabsorption Syndrome (IMS). The more established these syndromes are within a horse, the more likely the horse is to have anemia.
