Laminitis is considered a relentless disease because once a horse has had one episode the chance of having another is escalated. There are two primary reasons for this. One is that laminitic horses have a metabolic disease with the same glucose and insulin profile of type 2 diabetes, i.e. elevated blood glucose levels with deficient insulin and/or abnormal insulin action.1 The other reason is that horses with laminitis have immune system deficiencies that make recovery difficult and leave them vulnerable to infection, such as chronic hoof abscesses.
