During the developmental stage, there is a floodgate release of the enzyme known as MMPs [matrix metalloproteinases]. When this happens, the laminae that attach to the inner hoof wall and the coffin bone separate, leading to rotation and founder. In a healthy system, the enzyme is well regulated and its release provides the elasticity in the hoof needed for structural growth. But when there is an overload of toxicity in the blood, the inhibitory function fails and the floodgate opens.

Grass Founder is one example of how the release of MMPs becomes uncontrolled. The fructans (sugar and carbohydrate aspect) in grass are fermented by the bacteria in the hind gut (colon) of the horse. A high intake of fructans dramatically changes the bacterial population in the hind gut causing a massive overgrowth of the bacteria known as Streptococcus bovi. This damages the lining of the colon thereby releasing toxins into the bloodstream. When these toxins reach the hoof they cause an unrestricted release of MMPs and initiate laminae separation.

Our MMP Stop Solution quickly blocks the toxic overload at the hoof. The prevention of further contamination of the hoof with toxic blood restores the MMP regulation to a state where laminae separation is stopped. When the regulation of the MMPs is reestablished, the hoof can begin to heal. MMP Stop has been designed for use during the Developmental Stage to stop the toxic invasion to the laminae of the inner hoof wall. The degree of MMP Stop's effectiveness rests in the promptness of its application, i.e., as close to the triggering event as possible. We have found from the results of many observed applications that even when MMP Stop is given to horses during acute episodes there is still an acceleration to the recovery process.

We advise keeping this product on hand if your horse has a predisposition or history of laminitis.
