For Love of the Horse

Skepticism About Herbs

Baby Bailey, on herbs since birth.

Baby Bailey, was born very sick and was treated with herbs from For Love of the Horse.

I read an interesting quote this morning by Wayne Dyer.  It read, “The highest form of ignorance is when you reject something you don’t know anything about”.  I had to smile to myself thinking about how many times I’ve so much as mentioned the word “herbs” only to have people give a half smirk.  I know what they’re thinking.  “Voo-doo”, “yeah right”.  They’re looking at me as if I’m smoking the herbs.  It used to really get on my nerves, but now it just makes me sad for the horses.

I’ll admit it; I was at first a bit skeptical too.  I worked for a veterinarian and knew about many horse ailments and problems and the treatment strategies most often used.  I thought, “I’m sure this ‘stuff’ works, but to what extent?”  Little did I know about what the next 6 ½ years of my life would teach me about Chinese herbs!

Now, I can’t imagine any of my horses without them.  I’ve recovered 2 Insulin Resistant horses and am working on a 3rd.  I’ve recovered ringbone, respiratory problems, infection, Uveitis, bowed tendon, and intestinal Malabsorption Syndrome, to name a few things.  The horses that were treated had no other form of treatment, only the herbs formulated by Dr. Thomas.  The thing is a horse cannot lie.  They do not possess that quality!  If they’re better, they’re better; there is no “placebo” effect.  Voo-doo, magic?  Hardly.  How about medicine?

It’s also interesting how many people smirk and then ask me “what’s in it”.  Have they ever asked their doctor or pharmacist or vet what is in the pharmaceutical drugs they’re taking or giving?  Nope.  Why?  My assumption is that if it’s prescribed and approved by the FDA, it’s safe.  That isn’t true.  What about the side effects?  There are none with Dr. Thomas’ herbal formulas, so what’s the risk?  There are no guarantees in ANY medicine of any modality, so what do they have to lose?

I wish for the horses that caretakers would stop for a minute and consider that there ARE effective forms of treatment aside from Western medicine.  It’s so easy to be skeptical about something you don’t understand, but if you listen to someone who DOES understand, maybe your horse will benefit and in the long run, you will too.
