How It Works
Tendons and ligaments are like ropes in that they are one big cord of connective tissue made up of many little cords (fibers). When these fibers tear, it causes pain and inflammation as blood and fluid leak into the injured area, producing heat and swelling. Excessive inflammation can worsen tissue damage and weaken the surrounding tendon fibers. Tendons have limited blood supply making them slow to heal. As a result scar tissue (adhesions) can form that reduces flexibility and makes reinjury more likely.
